In Nipissing District Hockey League (NDHL) action recently, the Mattawa Rockets fared very well, as the clubs won four of five games. All games were played at the Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa.

After losing a close 6-5 decision to the Powassan Hawks on November 25, the Novice Rockets rebounded with a 7-3 victory on December 2 against the East Nipissing Vipers. No goal scorers were available for the first game, and all goal getters were not available for the second match, but it appears that Colton Sarrazin had the hat trick, while Chase Rodgers had a single counter.
Atom
The Atom category saw the Mattawa Rockets come up with a 6-4 win over the East Nipissing Vipers on November 25. Noah Backer was in on five of the six Rocket tallies, as he had the hat trick including the winner and two assists. Joshua Neddo chipped in with a pair of counters while Leah Chenier scored once. Aedan Leadston added an assist. There was no scoring in the first period with the Vipers leading 3-2 after two frames. The third stanza saw Mattawa knot things up at 3-3 but the visitors came right back 49 seconds later to take a 4-3 lead. That is when the home side turned on the Rockets and fired three goals in a 2:11 span, two of them in 15 seconds, to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Three penalties were called in the game, two of them going to Mattawa.
Pee Wee
Two goals and one assist by Noah Webster led the Pee Wee Rockets to a 6-1 victory over the East Nipissing Vipers (Perrons Freshmart) on November 25. Other tallies went to Logan Morin, Henry Wunsch, Denver Landriault and Person Groulx. Other assists were registered by Wunsch, Morin and Tara Maxwell. Mattawa led 3-1 after the first period, scoring the first two goals in a 31- second span and getting the third one with only a half second left in the period. There was no scoring in the second frame, but Mattawa put the game away with a trio of tallies in the third stanza. Webster was credited with the winning counter. The home side received the only penalty whistled down in the matchup.
Bantam
In the Bantam league, led by the shutout goaltending of William Thompson-Gariepy and the hat trick by Pee Wee call-up Noah Webster, the Mattawa Rockets blanked the North Bay Midget Ice Boltz 6-0.Other Rocket goals went to John Von Hassell, Maddox Backer, and Daniel Franceour. Kelora Huard chipped in with an assist. Von Hassell was credited with the winning goal. Mattawa led 1-0 after the first period, 2-0 after the second frame, and added four insurance counters in the third stanza. Four penalties were called in the contest, three of them going to the visitors.
MMHL
Ongoing at this time and loaded with exRocket players is the Mattawa Men’s Hockey League (MMHL). Games are played at the Mike Rodden Arena every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Double headers are usually featured on Sundays at 7 and 8:10 PM. Four teams make up the 2018-19 schedule including Janveaux, Contak, Myrts and Nortech.
